She knew this dog needed help, and she needed it now, so she wasted no time and gave the local shelter a call. But the dog wasn't alone. She had recently become a mommy. She had struggled trying to get someone to take the mom in. But finally, all the paperwork was done, and the momma dog was set to go to a new home. But when she went to pick her up, she wasn't moving. The momma wasn't planning on leaving her baby all alone. She wanted to make her feel safe, but what could she do?

Real Estate agent, Dava Hammock from Fort Worth Texas, is a major dog lover. On more than one occasion, she'd opened the doors of her home to countless dogs in need, but she wasn't about to stop now! Her heart was wide open and her home was set up to welcome one more helpless pup.

Dava grew up surrounded by animals, and she loved every minute of it. Being raised next to these loyal creatures really changes your life. Now Ava had everything she could've wanted, (and more!) She had a lovely home, children, and a few dogs. But life was about to flip the script and completely change her world.

But what is it about living with pets that makes us so happy, and why is it that a pet can have such a positive effect on children? Well according to a few studies on how the impact of animal companionship affects child development, growing up with pets can boost a person's self-esteem, social skills, teaches kids empathy, and improves cognitive development.

Generally speaking, kids are better off when there's a pet in the household. Some studies have found that kids living with pets are more physically active, less moody, and have fewer learning problems than those who don't own one. Unsurprisingly, Dava wanted her children to have a beautiful childhood surrounded by loving pets.

True Calling

True Calling

Dava and her children were on a tight schedule. She was juggling many responsibilities between being an attentive mom and a real estate agent. But Dava felt like there was something missing. One day, she was scrolling through social media when she was reminded about what truly moved her. One post in particular stood out.

Helping Hand

She wasn't really looking for anything in particular. All Dava wanted was to scroll down for a few minutes and unwind. But something caught her eye immediately. One of the posts on her feed included a video from Rescue Dogs Rock, a foster-based rescue from New York City. Her heart broke almost immediately, but she knew she couldn't wallow in sorrow for too long. Dava needed to help out, no matter what.

Video Of Two Dogs

The video featured a momma dog named Sadie, and her baby pup, Benzy. It was recorded by a volunteer from the shelter who wanted to spread the word and beg people to open their homes and their hearts to this adorable duo in need. Benzy kept hiding behind his momma, which made Dava's heart sink. “Momma Sadie doesn’t know what to do, She doesn’t know how to help her baby, Benzy. She knows they are both in danger at the kill shelter they were abandoned in and baby Benzy is so petrified she hides behind her Momma, hoping she can protect her, like all moms try to do for their children,” pleaded the video.

Volunteers at the shelter were pretty confident they might be able to find the pup a home, but they were concerned about his momma. Not only would it break their hearts if they had to separate them, but they also knew it wouldn't be an easy task. But sadly, people don't always tell the truth when they get to the shelter.

There are many reasons why an older dog can be found roaming the streets. Some of them arrive at the shelter with no history whatsoever. Others are in terrible shape, while a few of them are pretty healthy. But some of these "strays" used to belong to someone. In fact, many people bring dogs to shelters and claim they found them in the streets so they can avoid paying a surrender fee.

Clearly, we need tighter laws around animal ownership and better programs to control the population. In the meantime, no one really knew what this beautiful momma dog and her frightened pup had been through. The volunteers were focusing on getting them a home. But they were trembling in fear.

When Dava stumbled into that post, her heart sunk. She kept replaying the video, over and over again. “I saw that and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh,’” she said in an interview. “It had been shared 1,600 times, and I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? Nobody has stepped up to foster or adopt these dogs after that many people shared it?'"

She Had A Plan

She wasn't about to stay put and allow these terrified puppies to fend for themselves. She got in touch with the co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock, Stacey Silverstein, who informed her, “They were very, very, very frightened, especially the baby, they just needed help,” But Dava was facing a major conundrum. She could shelter at least one more dog, but two? That was virtually impossible. To make matters more complicated, she lived many hours away from New York City!

But She Was So Far

Unfortunately, it seemed that life was throwing curveball after curveball, as Dava lived a whopping 9 hours away from the shelter. She knew was completely insane for even thinking of driving there, but she couldn't help it. It was in her nature. “I was like, ‘I’ll do what I have to do to help them. I’ll drive nine hours, whatever needs to be done,’” Dava said. “And they were like, ‘Are you sure?’” But Dava could've never imagined she'd end up changing these two angels' lives forever.

The second she stepped foot, her eyes focused on little Benzy. He was absolutely petrified and couldn't stop shaking. It really kicked her maternal instincts in full gear. Until she saw his momma dog, standing nearby. She was guarding her baby, and she wasn't keen on leaving him alone. They cozied up in a corner in the kennel in an attempt to protect themselves. Benzy's mom could sense they were in real danger, but when Dava met the pups, she completely changed her mind. She didn't care if it was crazy or not. She needed to save them both.

Initially, Dava informed the shelter that she didn't have room for two pups in her home back in Texas. But now that she'd seen the cold harsh reality, she knew she needed to do whatever it took to make room for both Benzy and his mom. The shelter was ecstatic. They couldn't believe that Dava would be able to foster both dogs. They really didn't want to split them up, but they understood that most people would have a hard time taking care of two dogs. The little furry family hopped inside Dava's car. They finally had a glimmer of hope in their eyes. “The mama put her head over the baby, and they slept on the way back,” said Dava. But would Benzy and his momma have a tough time co-living with Dava's dogs?

Dava's 12-year-old daughter had set up the living room area so both Benzy and Sadie could feel comfortable and have their own space. But when Sadie sat on the floor, it was clear to everyone in that room that she was beyond thrilled to be in Dava's home. This incredible human had just saved hers and her puppy's lives.

Feeling The Love

Sadie wasted no time and sprinted towards Dava's daughter to introduce herself. It only took a few seconds for this loving momma dog to cozy up to her and cover her in slobbery wet kisses. She wanted to thank her for being so kind to her puppy and her. But Benzy wasn't about to stay behind for too long. Soon enough, he strolled towards her too and snuggled up next to her.

Sadie and Benzy were finally relaxing at a safe environment were they knew they'd be taken care of and loved. But Dava couldn't help but admire how protective Sadie was of her baby. “The mama is always going to check on the baby,” she said. “Whenever you pick the baby up she will follow you like, ‘What are you doing with my baby? Where are you taking her?’”

It Takes A While

It Takes A While

When a dog finds a new home, (temporary or not,) it usually takes a while until they feel safe and protected. These two would need a few more weeks until they could finally let go and relax. That's why Dava and her family wanted the pups to stay in a private area, far away from Dava's dogs. There was no need for them to meet her other dogs yet, as this would put a lot of stress on the baby and this momma dog. And the last thing they needed was more stress!

Dava did the right thing by separating Sadie and her baby from the rest of the pack. If she would've introduced them all at once, it would've put unnecessary stress and made her feel like she was in danger. And their private living accommodations allowed the pups to adjust correctly to their new home.

Cuddling It Up

Clearly, neither Sadie nor Benzy were used to getting cuddled and loved every day. They opened up to Dava and her family in virtually no time. They were really enjoying having everyone in her family treat them so well. But now it was time to introduce them to the furry members of Dava's family.

Dava was nervous to introduce Sadie and her baby to her other furry sons. They'd been enjoying their privacy for a while now, but she felt it was time for them to meet her furry family too. She wasn't sure how Sadie would act around them, either, as she'd been really protective of Benzy. Dava decided to hold her in her arms while the pack smelled the newcomers.

The baby had no qualms and headed straight towards Dava's rescue dogs. They were really big dogs, but they were just as playful as little Benzy. All they wanted to do was play around with their new furry friend. “The baby opened up faster because she wanted to play. We put the toys out around them, and the baby automatically went to the toys,” Dava said. “The puppy will even go steal the toys from my big dogs, which is hilarious.”

A week had gone by, and Dava's rescue dogs, Sadie, and Benzy were finally starting to warm up to each other. Dava's dogs had kindly welcomed Sadie and her puppy, and they did so with wagging tails and slobbery wet kisses. “The mama now loves to play with all of them, and they all go outside together,” said Dava. The momma dog and her baby wouldn't have to be frightened anymore. Their past was finally in the past, and now they were loving and living life in Dava's home. Sadie and her baby finally felt safe. “The mama is a big-time licker and very loving, she wants you to hold her almost like a baby, she wants to be close, next to you.”
